I’ve been trying out the new emoji and, unsurprisingly, if I’ve messaged someone who is using iOS 15.3.1, which has been everyone unless they were on the developers’ or public beta versions, the emoji just show up as square boxes with question marks in them. Many people will install it as soon as they can. So, why did Apple choose today instead of its routine Tuesday release day? Well, it’s obviously had the final software ready for a little while: the review units of iPhone SE, iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro I’ve been testing since the beginning of last week all had the general release version pre-installed, for instance.Īnd when this level of synchronicity is needed on multiple Apple platforms, it seems likely Apple got it all together in especially good time. For what it’s worth, I downloaded iOS 15.4 to my iPhone 13 Pro Max just a few minutes after the software went live and it was a straightforward and speedy experience, taking less than 20 minutes for the 1.3GB update to download and install. Apple will be aware of this, of course, and done everything it can to ensure a smooth and error-free experience for the many millions who will be tuning in today to get the benefits of the very latest software, whichever products they use. Even when iOS 15 launched, macOS Monterey was some time after. I’m pretty certain this is the first time ever that Apple has released iOS, iPadOS and macOS updates at the same moment. That’s because of Universal Control (details of which are below), which needs iPad and Mac to both be on the latest edition of software to work together. In a move which is almost certainly completely unprecedented, Apple has also released macOS 12.3 at the very same second.
